Mangrove Conservation and Management in Guyana
Mangroves play a vital role in protecting Guyana’s low-lying coastal zone, where approximately 90% of the population resides. These ecosystems serve as natural sea defenses, reducing coastal erosion, buffering storm surges, and supporting biodiversity and fisheries. The responsibility for mangrove conservation and restoration in Guyana lies primarily with the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) through its Mangrove Department.
The Mangrove Department was established to coordinate national efforts in the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of mangrove forests. Its work is guided by national policies such as the National Mangrove Action Plan, which outlines strategies for conservation, monitoring, research, and community involvement.
